This week, Ernest Cline, author of Ready Player One, revealed that his New York Times best-seller will have a sequel. Ready Player Two is set to release on November 24th, and the author has confirmed that all main characters will be returning for this sequel. Steven Spielberg brought the OASIS to life for us on the big screen in 2018, which became a huge blockbuster hit.
Ready Player One is a Sci-Fi novel that takes place in 2045 within the OASIS. The OASIS is a Virtual World that was created by James Halliday, where you could do just about anything. It was a step inside of a virtual place that was better than real life. You went to school here and sat in virtual classrooms. Here, you went to work, did your shopping, interacted with friends and family, but most importantly, you were there for the Gaming! James was a big fan of the 80s pop-culture, and after his death, he left behind easter eggs for gamers to find to have access to his fortunes and to run his company.
In this futuristic world, we follow protagonist Wade Watts aka Parzival on his quest to win “The Hunt” to unlock the ultimate prize by Halliday. Parzival finds friendship and love but gains enemies on his way to the top. Revisit memories of your childhood or step inside your parent’s prime as you watch him on his wild ride to number one. Halliday made sure to put a lot of 80s pop-culture within The Hunt, and he did not leave out his personal love for video games of that time as well.
While there is currently no synopsis for the new title, I am ecstatic about the news of the sequel. I’m not sure which way he’s going to go with it, but I am pleased to know the characters will be returning. If you haven’t read the first book or seen the movie, I suggest you do before the release. I for one enjoyed the book more than the movie, but the movie was also good. If you want to take a deeper dive into the story and the OASIS, I suggest reading the novel.
Will this new story be following one of his friends? Will it finish where the story left off? Will we see what has become of them?
