Paramount Pictures and Activision have confirmed that their upcoming Call of Duty movie will hit theaters on June 30, 2028. The Call of Duty movie’s June release is a strategic move, coinciding with the 25th anniversary of the original PC game from 2003. The announcement came as part of Paramount’s presentation at CinemaCon 2026.
Peter Berg (Love Survivor, Deepwater Horizon) will direct the film, co-writing the script with Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1923). For Sheridan, this Call of Duty film will be his last major project at Paramount Pictures, as he will transition to NBCUniversal in 2029.
Production Team and Distribution
The producing team includes Berg, Sheridan, and Activision president Rob Kostich. Paramount Pictures will handle worldwide distribution of the film. While focused on one blockbuster, the deal allows Paramount to expand the franchise to film and TV. With
Last fall, Activision surveyed fans, asking them to rank their preferred basis for the film. Options included Black Ops, Modern Warfare, Zombies, something outside those sub-brands, or an entirely new story. No final direction has been publicly confirmed.
“We want to make sure that the authenticity of it is captured on a human level so that it feels really real, and infuse that with epic scope,” Kostich said at CinemaCon.
Call of Duty Franchise Success
For 16 years straight, Call of Duty has been the top-selling video game series in the U.S., boasting over 500 million copies sold worldwide. Over two decades, the franchise has grown to include over 30 main games across various sub-brands and settings.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) release was not just a game drop, it was a ground breaking historical event. Local news covered the midnight launch nationwide, treating it like a major global event.
Activision backed MW2 with a $200 million launch budget, which was on par with a summer Hollywood blockbuster. The substantial budget of that era established a new standard for the marketing of interactive entertainment moving forward. The game hired Hollywood composer Hans Zimmer, signaling the blurring of lines between gaming and filmmaking.
Video Game Movie Trend
The Call of Duty adaptation arrives at a strong moment for gaming properties on the big screen. Recent successes include the Super Mario Bros. Movie. The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has also seen continued success for Paramount, bolstering the studio’s confidence in this market.
Paramount’s David Ellison, a self-described lifelong Call of Duty fan, said the studio is approaching the film with the same commitment to excellence it brought to Top Gun: Maverick.
Timeline and Expectations
The June 30, 2028 release places the Call of Duty movie in the competitive summer blockbuster season against other major studio titles. The development timeline allows Berg and Sheridan to create a film that honors the source material, without rushing.
There are no casting announcements have been made, and plot details remain under wraps. With the franchise’s storytelling spanning sub-brands, everyone will see which direction the creative team chooses. The Call of Duty movie represents Hollywood’s response to the conversation Modern Warfare 2 started.
