Would you ever think you could get lit off of ice cream? Would you use “happy hour” and “ice cream” in the same sentence? If you answered no, do yourself a favor and visit a Tipsy Scoop in NYC.
I went for my first time this weekend, and I was surprised at how much I love it. They carded me, and that was a nice feeling. If you know, you know. I tried a few flavors that had such a fresh taste, they tasted like the actual spirit. The Mango Margarita is a sorbet made with fresh mangoes and infused with orange liqueur and my favorite alcohol, Tequila. This one is perfect for anyone who does not have a friendly relationship with dairy. But if you are okay with dairy, Santa’s Cookies & Whiskey consists of vanilla ice cream with chocolate chip cookie pieces and infused with Whiskey.
The Glenlivet Hot Toddy Ice Cream made with The Glenlivet Founder’s Reserve Single Malt Whiskey stole my heart. It was so good, I could have eaten a pint or 2 of it in one sitting. The robust flavors of the Single Malt Whiskey were noticeable, but didn’t overpower the ice cream. Perfect balance and perfect harmony.
First of all, as a bartender, when you add alcohol to anything “frozen,” it usually has difficulty staying frozen due to the freezing point of alcohol. I would have assumed my ice cream would melt, but nope, not this.
I ate my scoop slowly, so I could savor every moment. I can’t forget about a few other factors that made my visit enjoyable. The space was small and cozy, and the person who attended to us was awesome. It may sound trivial, but having someone know as much about the product as she did adds to the experience.
And they have a happy hour from Monday through Friday between the hours of 4 pm and 6 pm. This included 2 for 1 scoops and $8 boozy ice cream flights. If you are in the Williamsburg location, you are also able to enjoy $10 boozy ice cream cocktails for happy hour.
Now, if you want to put your culinary skills to the test, they even offer a Boozy Ice Cream Making Class. It’s a two-hour class held in their production facility in East Harlem; the same place where they make their liquor-infused ice cream and sorbet recipes. You are not learning, just learning from anyone, it is from the chefs. You also get hands-on with the founder of Tipsy Scoop and the Chief of Operations, and bring home 2 pints of the ice cream that you create, an amazing takeaway.
Like I said, check this place out if you love ice cream and/or alcohol. Listen, go to Tipsy Scoop even if you don’t like ice cream. It might change your mind.
If you are not in the NYC area there are also more locations in the states, and you can order online as they ship nationwide.
