Techland has released the first part of their devblog series for Dying Light: The Beast on how Kyle Crane return. The entry, “They Tried to Break Him,” gives a closer look at what Kyle Crane endured before his return. This update is packed with details about his character, appearance, and gameplay style.

How Kyle Crane’s Look Was Designed

For Kyle’s design, the team wanted to keep his heroic feel. They avoided making him look too old. “We ruled them out and focused instead on subtle changes,” wrote the art team. Scars and marks now cover his body, showing years of experiments. His hands, often seen in first-person, have black veins that represent his struggle and Beast Mode. Even his walkie-talkie battery drains as the game goes on. “These tiny touches matter to us, and it’s always rewarding when players notice them.”

Kyle Crane Is Half Survivor, Half Beast

His design tells two stories. The left side is the human survivor, with his iconic watch and Jade’s necklace. The right side reveals the beast—dark scars, a corrupted eye, and thorns on his arm. “It’s a constant reminder that he is caught between two worlds, half survivor, half beast.”

Realistic Combat and Movement

The gameplay feels more grounded and tactical. Crane’s fighting style mixes old moves with new ones. “It was very important that each hit felt strong and that striking an enemy provided satisfying feedback,” shared lead animator Marcin Bahryn-Kamiński. Gun handling feels steady, showing Kyle’s military background. “The weapon should have stronger recoil at the start, gradually stabilizing to give players the sense that Kyle is fully in control.”

Jumping and sliding start slow, to reflect his time in captivity. His strength returns as players progress, and his moves show more power and anger.

Emotional Storytelling

Voice actor Roger Craig Smith returns as Kyle. His performance shows the pain and recovery in Crane’s journey. Cutscenes capture real emotion, like panic attacks and heavy breathing. “We wanted realism… These details matter, because they make players truly feel what Kyle is going through.”

Techland promises that Dying Light: The Beast will deliver a raw, emotional journey for Kyle Crane and fans alike. Look out for the next devblog as launch approaches, and discover more behind-the-scenes secrets of this tortured hero.
