Man, June has been the longest year ever. I don’t think you need a reminder on how 2020 is leading in the scoreboards but one thing that it is constantly increasing: love and support. Nothing like a crappy situation to remind you of the good memories you may have taken for granted. Especially when a relationship/friendship runs its course and comes to an end, we remember all of the amazing parts that made it meaningful in the first place. For example, a favorite video game you grew up with, I don’t remember liking Crash Bandicoot back then but I have fond memories that compel me to appreciate it now.
Why do we do that? It’s a mixture of obsessing over the past and anxiety over the future. Guess what’s missing? The present. Now, I’m not saying you completely neglect the “here and now” but face it, it’s not always in the front of our minds. Take this for a bigger example. A loved one passes. What do we do? We gather that person’s friends, family, and colleagues to celebrate the life of that person. We share stories of how we met and our favorite memories together. We laugh and we cry, but that person is still gone without a chance to know exactly how everyone felt about them.
My mother always told me, in a joking way, “Give me flowers now while I’m alive….not when I’m gone.” That hit hard. She likes the smell of flowers and the brightness it brings to her kitchen and living room. She can’t smell them after. So that brings that good ol’ question: “How come we have to lose something or someone to express our love and appreciation for them?”
Walter Green, the creator of Say it Now online service, had the same idea. He asks “Why do we wait until the end, to celebrate someone who’s been there since the beginning?” That is a fantastic question. His way to combat this is so innovative, I kick myself for not thinking of it myself. His site is designed to help us create what he calls a “Living Tribute” that we can send to someone we love right now. Genius. With the pandemic sitting on our laps, our best way to do so is by using our computers and phones while utilizing Zoom.
Say it Now, this online service gives you a few options to make this a success. There is a free version that gives you full access to pre-written templates for the individuals that aren’t always the best with their words. With these templates, it gives you all of the talking points to include in your video. You can then go ahead and create your Zoom meetings/recordings to begin your tribute. But for those who have no idea where to start, they are offering a package to walk you through the entire process for $500. This includes a personal concierge throughout the process who will coordinate schedules, set up the zoom meetings with no time restrictions, help moderate the rehearsal, and help make sure everything runs smoothly. In the end, they’ll record, edit, and share the video with the tribute once the whole process is done. This is perfect, especially during a time where the world can use a lot more gratitude and love.
