[dropcap size=small]R[/dropcap]ockstar has recently debuted their second trailer of the anticipated open-world shooter, Red Dead Redemption 2. In it we receive a much broader analysis of the game’s story, environment, and timeline within the Red Dead franchise.
From the trailer we can observe a new protagonist named, Arthur Morgan, who seems to be a debt collector of sorts for the notorious “Van Der Linde gang,” of whom the previous main character of the series John Marston was personally affiliated with before the fallout. It appears that the gang is doing several heist across the county from train robberies to bank deposit thefts and is wanted across the country, which is implied by Arthur in the trailer.
This story’s plot heard from the footage conveys a sense of great similarity along the lines of GTA V’s heists which was the main theme of that game. In addition to the gang we see several other characters featured in the trailer like the Native American man, an unknown woman stabbing a man’s hand in a saloon, and Bill Williamson seen towards the end walking from a burning house on the left hand side, along with Arthur and a unknown man in the middle. Keep in mind, there has been rumors of multiple protagonists like GTA V’s three characters, so there is a possibility of this being the same with the outlaw gang.
However the biggest interest to me in the trailer was the revealing of the gang leader himself, Dutch van der Linde, whose younger presence confirms officially that this game is a prequel to its predecessor Red Dead Redemption. John Marston however has yet remained to be seen but we can all assume he will make an appearance in the game as he’s is heavily affiliated with the gang before the events of Red Dead Redemption.
My Conclusion is that i hope we get to see a game that is as much of a masterpiece as Red Dead Redemption was but hopefully not feel like a western GTA V due to its apparent heist theme shown in the trailer. I was also hoping for more of a diverse type of protagonist such as a Native American which could have displayed a much different perspective and culture in the days of the old west rather than a plain white american cowboy/outlaw archetype which has already been demonstrated in the previous game with John Marston. Heck they could have even went with a story about the life of being a young Native American choosing to be an outlaw as a way of freedom rather than a slave which is what Dutch’s character took advantage of in building his army which I was intrigued by and wondered of how those relationships worked. However, you can still bet your money that you’ll see me grabbing this game off the shelf immediately at launch Spring 2018 !
