Who says you can’t be a bad ass cat going through galactic turmoil to save your owner and complete his mission ? Well the awesome Doinksoft’s Gato Roboto is all that and some Chipps ( Rick & Morty watch out). During my time at PAX West at the Devolver booth I had the pleasure of meeting the crew and learning more about their latest project, Gato Roboto and here’s my say on it.
As lover of Metroid and other action side-scrollers this by far is very unique in it’s own way. The manifestation of why not from the creators, level design, awesome chip tunes gives that nostalgic kick that could forever live on. The black and white low definition graphics shares how gameplay is what brings this fun platformer actually alive. As a 90s kid you can attest to all the black and green screens of the Gameboy, but old and new gamers will rejoice in what action packed Cat on a mission has to offer.
The game offers no audio dialog but blippy skats of the characters talking from, has a chip tone beat to it that is dope to hear which is a treat if you are not into random randomness to fill in for non voice acting. So at first you are greeted by what is to be an astronaut that crashes and fails to complete his mission but bugs out enough to brief his cat that he or she must complete the mission for him.
What’s dope is the quirky story of leaving it up to a cat to save the day. Like who doesn’t love cats ? Well we play as this cat and then is guided by the owner on how you get the robotic suit to then become Gato Roboto ! The gameplay alone follows the similar styles of a Metroid but uniquely changes on how each level is set up. With the robotics suit you’re be able to defeat foes along the journey as you platform be your way through, but there are areas where the suit cannot go and this is where you leave the suit to go through nooks just like how a true cat maneuvers.
The switch up in gameplay is fun because depending on where you go unlocks more to the level for health pickups and abilities to go through more of the levels. For instance when you solve how to get to the other side just being the cat, you get to find a new ability such as a rocket to blast through rocks or to kill enemies faster which is needed.
Once you get travel more through the level figuring how to get to one end you meet another robotic creature, this time a freaking Mouse Roboto which is hilarious. The boss fight was fun and not too challenging at first but after speaking to the team I am curious to see what other type of Boss levels we’ll encounter in the game that’ll relate to a cat.
From the awesome fun and hilarious platforming gameplay, abilities that make sense to get through obstacles, the remarkable chiptune compositions, and seeing how much fun and passion the Doiksoft crew had in making Gato Roboto, shows in the game how fun you’ll have. I definitely did during my demo at PAX West 2018. I definitely recommend Gato Roboto for a different type platformer if you are a fan of Metroid, MegaMan and Castlevania. It get the DOPE approved.
Gato Roboto is schedule to release in 2019 .
