After the exciting reveal at Summer Game Fest, Techland is back with an extended gameplay preview of Dying Light: The Beast. Fans got a deeper look at Kyle Crane’s new world, enhanced powers, and the dynamic playstyle this survival horror entry offers. The game launches August 22 on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
Exploring Castor Woods in Greater Detail
The new footage takes players further into Castor Woods. This once-beautiful tourist zone is now a dangerous wilderness filled with treacherous terrain, hostile factions, and heightened horror. Every day-night cycle changes the experience, demanding constant vigilance. The environment looks alive with dynamic weather and detailed audio that adds to the fear and immersion.
Harnessing Kyle’s Beast Powers
Kyle’s signature Beast Mode is a highlight of the gameplay. Franchise Director Tymon Smektała says,
“Beast mode is a special condition for Kyle. When pressure is too high, he unleashes the beast within—ripping zombies apart, becoming an unstoppable killing machine. This raw power and emotion is what we want players to feel.”
Activating Beast Mode grants lethal strength and speed but lowers defense and precision, requiring careful timing. Combat combines melee, firearms, improvised weapons, and tactical distractions. Firecrackers, for example, lure enemies away for stealth kills or strategic escapes.
Co-Op, Skills, and Story Integration
The full campaign supports up to four players, keeping story progression synchronized. The skill tree grows as you face enemies, giving options in Beast, Survival, Power, and Agility. Player choices and enemy behavior adapt dynamically with time and weather, adding complexity and replay value.
Dev Blog: ‘Save the Date, Survivors’
Franchise Director Tymon Smektała shared a heartfelt dev blog inviting players to prepare for the thrilling adventure.
He calls The Beast,
“the next step in our journey, combining free-flowing parkour, savage melee combat, and the dual day/night gameplay into one intense experience. Like a double espresso—powerful and dense.”
He adds,
“We wanted to create the best Dying Light game possible, drawing on a decade of experience. For longtime fans, The Beast connects the first two games and answers long-standing questions. For newcomers, Kyle’s 13-year captivity makes everything feel fresh.”
It highlights Techland’s vision for The Beast as a fresh yet faithful return to survival horror. Smektała emphasizes storytelling focused on Kyle’s transformation, revenge, and the haunting atmosphere of Castor Woods.
